Community Read 2025:
Exploring Tragedy and Resilience with In the Evil Day
Continuing the CSI: New England series theme, which explores notable crimes from our region, the Great North Woods Libraries have selected In the Evil Day: Violence Comes to One Small Town by Richard Adams Carey as the 2025 Community Read. This powerful book offers a deeply human account of the events in Colebrook and the lives forever changed. Carey, an award-winning author of four books, brings both literary skill and personal insight to this work. A Connecticut native and Harvard graduate, Carey makes his home in northern New Hampshire, where he continues to write and teach.
The Great North Woods Libraries are honored to host Richard Adams Carey for a live author talk on Wednesday, October 8 at 6 PM, where he will discuss his study of the tragedy and its enduring aftermath.
Throughout the summer, libraries across the region will hold community book discussions centered on In the Evil Day. All are welcome to participate in these conversations about a pivotal moment in local history.
For discussion dates, times, and to borrow a copy of the book, please contact your local Great North Woods Library. All events are free and open to the public. Space and supplies are limited; preference will be given to local library members. For more information, contact one of the libraries who are partnering in this series: Berlin Public Library 603-752-5210, Gorham Public Library 603-466-2525, Randolph Public Library 603-466-5408, and WMCC Fortier Library 603-342-3087.
